OPENAIR® PLASMA – cleaning, activating and coating with atmospheric plasma

Since 1995 Plasmatreat, which today is a globally operating company, has focused its activities on the development of atmospheric-pressure plasma processes. Openair® technology is protected internationally by patents and is employed in almost all fields of industrial production.

Without any use of chemicals environmentally friendly, innovative and low-cost surface treatments have been implemented. Materials such as plastic, metal, glass or ceramics are efficiently and effectively cleaned, activated or coated in-line by means of Openair® plasma. With the latest PlasmaPlus® technology nanocoatings can be applied selectively to the most varied materials which are subjected to ultrafine plasma-cleaning beforehand. A brilliant visual appearance after painting, optimum adhesion in plastic joints and high anticorrosive protection in the pre-treatment of metals are just some examples of the results achievable.

The plasma technology patented by Plasmatreat is compatible without restriction with the use of robots. The jet systems employed require neither a chamber nor do they interrupt the production process. They are integrated in-line, that is to say in new or already existing production lines. Today Openair® plasma already serves most international car manufacturers and suppliers to the industry with more than 70 applications.

New composites are made possible in two-component extrusion, i.e. materials that hitherto were incompatible are made to adhere to one another in the extrusion process by this plasma technology. Predominantly this involves joining a rigid material to a flexible material, as in a composite made from silicone and polypropylene. The consequence is not only cost-effective production, but also products having highly individual demands on the component materials can be obtained.

In December 2007 the American technical journal Finishing Today Magazine (FTM) honoured Plasmatreat with the FTM INNOVATION AWARD 2007 in the processing technology category. Plasmatreat received the prize for a revolutionary new environmentally friendly process in the surface pretreatment of aluminium.

Plasmatreat has an international presence through technology centres in Germany, the United States and in Japan as well as sales offices all over the globe.
